Killing Scurrius gives solid combat XP per hour and offers a safe environment to RuneScape gold practice skills you'll need for harder bosses later, such as Jad or the Inferno.
Getting to Scurrius
Start in Varrock. Teleport or run there.
Head northeast of the central square, near the city wall.
Look for the manhole (close to where the Romeo & Juliet quest NPCs hang out).
Climb down into the Varrock Sewers.
Walk east until you find the broken bars. Behind these bars lies Scurrius' lair.
When interacting with the entrance, you'll see three options:
Normal: Anyone on your world can join the fight. Scurrius has 1,500 HP here.
Private: A solo instance where Scurrius has 500 HP. Highly recommended for beginners.
Peek: Lets you check if anyone's already inside.
For learning purposes, always choose Private. The lower HP means shorter, less stressful fights.
Recommended Gear and Setup
The beauty of Scurrius is that you don't need end-game equipment to kill him. In fact, you can beat him in bronze armor if you're consistent with prayer flicks. That said, here are some setups:
Max Setup (for comfort): Elite Void, Fire Cape, Dragon Defender or Avernic, Berserker ring (imbued), Primordial Boots, and the Bone Mace. Activate Piety for maximum DPS.
Mid-Tier Setup: Rune or Dragon armor, a Rune Defender, and a Bone Mace or Dragon Scimitar. Protect prayers will do most of the heavy lifting.
Budget Setup: Bronze or Iron armor, a Rune Mace, and basic food like lobsters. The fight is still very doable as long as you practice flicking prayers.
Inventory tips:
Super combat potion or Divine potion.
Anglerfish or sharks for food.
Prayer potions to sustain flicking.
Key Drops and Rewards
While Scurrius won't make you rich, he does drop some useful items:
Rune drops: Handy for alching to make a bit of RuneScape gold or train Magic passively.
Scurrius Spine: The rare drop you're really after. Combine this with a Rune Mace to create the Bone Mace, a strong and thematic weapon against him.
XP Lamps: If you already own the Bone Mace, you can trade extra spines to Historian Aldo for a 5,000 XP lamp in a combat stat of your choice.
For lower-level players, even the rune drops can be worthwhile-20-30k GP an hour adds up when you're just starting out.
The Fight Mechanics
Here's what you'll encounter during the fight:
Opening phase: Always start with Protect from Melee active. Run up to Scurrius, drink your potion, and engage.
Cheese phase: Occasionally, Scurrius runs to eat cheese. This signals a prayer swap. Be ready to flick to Protect from Ranged or Protect from Magic.
Shadows: Watch for shadows under your feet. Step away to avoid heavy melee damage.
Rat spawns: Scurrius summons six rats. Kill them quickly (ideally in under 3 seconds) before returning focus to him.
The fight loops through these mechanics until he's down. Once you learn the rhythm of prayer flicking and movement, you'll barely take any damage.
Why Fight Scurrius?
Prayer Flicking Practice: If you're nervous about Jad or the Inferno, Scurrius is the best place to learn. He constantly forces you to cheap Runescape gold swap prayers.
